“You remember the number?” Cagney said.

“Yes. Twenty seven.” Shannon went over and stood before the drawer in the eerie light. She looked at Ann, Tyler and Betty. “Ready?”

“I.....think so,” Ann said. “I don’t know. What’s in there?”

“Us,” Shannon said. She pulled the drawer open and Ann gasped in disbelief. Betty backed up and grabbed her crucifix.

“No,” she gasped, and fell to her knees. She began to sob.

“This isn’t right,” Ann said, backing up. “Get us out of here.”

“Good God,” Tyler whispered. “She’s so beautiful.”

“Relax,” Shannon said. “This isn’t Larry. She was the leader of a peace mission. This was her reward, courtesy of the almighty human being. What do you think about us now? This is what we are,” she said, lifting the sheet to reveal Nancy’s bullet riddled body. “A bunch of rotten, violent killers who don’t have the brains or the common decency to recognize help when it stares us in the face.”

Betty got up and came over. She reached out with the crucifix in her hand. She placed it on Nancy’s body and knelt down. She stayed there for the longest time, then stood up. “It’s all right,” she whispered. “She understands. She forgives us. But we have to change. Let’s go.” She took the crucifix headed for the door.

“Kinda says it all, doesn’t it,” Shannon said as she followed Betty. “Come on, General. Maybe you learned something today.”

“Yeah. I learned I should have retired last year when I had the chance. Instead, I get besieged by you and Jimmy Swaggart’s daughter over there.”

“Tough titty,” Shannon said. “Show us to our quarters.”
